Three Steps To Take When You Are Locked Out Of Your Car

Posted on: 25 April 2016

Being locked out of your car can be a stressful situation if you don't have a spare key to easily gain access back into your vehicle. If you are locked out of your car, the best thing to do is to not stress, but instead take these three steps in a calm manner:

Determine if You Need More Than a Locksmith:

In some cases, you will want to consider calling 911 if you feel like you are stranded and could potentially be in danger. Being locked out of your car in the middle of nowhere can be a scary situation, especially at night. A police officer would be able to stay with you until the locksmith has arrived. Police officers are likely to get to you much more quickly than a locksmith would. Otherwise, if there are any open shops nearby, you should consider waiting there or if you have friends or family nearby, you can ask for them to stay with you, as well.

Call a Locksmith:

Once you are sure that you are protected, you can call a locksmith to help you retrieve your keys. If you have roadside assistance, be sure to call your insurance company to determine which locksmith in your area will be covered by your insurance company. Otherwise, the best thing to do is call a few different locksmiths to compare prices before determining which locksmith is the most affordable. In order to make this process quicker in this stressful situation, it's always best to save a locksmith's number in your contacts before you even need to hire one so you know who to call right away in this situation.

Ask for a Spare:

If you do not have a spare key to your vehicle, you should consider asking the locksmith to make one for you after they have retrieved your keys. Although this will cost more, it can save you from being in this situation in the future. Some people keep their spare in their wallet or with friends or family who would be able to bring it to you in the case that you are locked out of your car.

When you know the three steps to take when you are locked out of your car, you can be sure that you keep the stressful situation as calm as possibly so that you can get back onto the road quicker and with a level head. Contact a lawyer who handles lockouts for more information.
