Unconventional Ploys From Burglars And How To Counter Them

Posted on: 30 March 2016

It's the unconventional burglar attacks that will give you the most trouble. When they simply pick locks or wait to you go on vacation, these are approaches that you can expect and guard against. However, here are a few that you may not be completely aware of that you should also keep in mind when constructing your strategy for preventing break-ins.

The Confederate Ploy

It's a common tactic of burglars to have a confederate that helps them get access to your house. For example, someone who has a reason to be in your house during the day could unlock a window really quickly while you aren't looking. Then, either themselves or their confederate can simply open the window and slip into your house that following night.

This means that you should watch strangers who are in your house while they are there such as package delivery people, plumbers, electricians, or anyone else that you called for randomly. It also means that you should be careful about letting anyone like that use the bathroom or allow them access to any other part of your house unsupervised. Additionally, you need to check all windows and doors at night just to be on the safe side. Make sure they all have locks as well.

The Second Story Leap

It's common for people to forget that it's not impossible for burglars to gain access to the second story of your house. If you have any outhouses or other small buildings like tool sheds near to your house, it's common for burglars to use these as a way to climb up and then leap to the second story of your house.

At this point, they count on you not locking windows up there. Many people figure that this isn't necessary, and they may often leave windows open at night due to wanting to get fresh air or for whatever other reason. That's why it's so important to go to your locksmith and make sure that you have high-quality locks for your second story windows and to always keep them locked.

There are plenty of options for making it easier to open windows in order to get a breeze in at night if you want it without having to worry about leaving your window unlocked. This is possible to find from just about any locksmith.

Obviously, more sophisticated security systems will also help with this situation. But this doesn't mean that you absolutely need it to stop threats that are less obvious. Contact a business, such as Hicks Safes & Locks Inc, for more information.
